The Assault Of Gun Control

Gun control has become a hot topic in the United States as of now. There will be those who are for guns and those who are against guns. Those who are for guns, assert that it is our right to bear arms according to the 2nd amendment and those who are against guns, believe that guns are unnecessary and cause more violence. Assault weapons, in particular, have caused too many deaths and the government needs to put a ban on assault weapons.
First and foremost, assault weapons have claimed the lives of too many people in the world. Take a look at the Umpqua Community College, Colorado movie theater and Sandy Hook shootings. What all of those shootings have in common, is that an assault weapon was used by the perpetrator. Mass shootings like these, just show how powerful and dangerous assault weapons are. These assault weapons are claiming the lives of people ranging from children to elderly. Mass shootings are examples of how assault weapons provoke more harm and violence.
However, some may notice that all of these mass shootings happened in gun free zones. Gun free zones were introduced by the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990. The act prohibits anyone from conceal carrying a gun in the area. Two of the examples of gun free zones were Umpqua Community College and Sandy Hook Elementary. Shootings are most likely to occur in areas where people will not shoot back at the perpetrator. The Colorado movie theater shooting happened in an area where guns were banned. If these places allowed concealed permit holders, maybe the death toll from these shootings would be far fewer because people would be shooting back at the perpetrator and stopping him from killing.
Although, there are no ways for a concealed carrier to get around this law. If a concealed carrier happens to conceal carry in a gun free zone it would cost them their gun and their permit and not to mention fines and possible jail time. If the area was not a gun free zone, the shooting possibly could have happened somewhere else.
Second, assault weapons are not necessary. Using an assault weapon for self-defense is very bad because of how big and bulky the weapon is and it makes it much harder to move around in your home. There is no reason to own an assault weapon because of how impractical it is for a civilian. Owning an assault weapon is a luxury, one does not need it to defend themselves because there are far better resources. And there are many different ways for people to defend themselves without an assault weapon. Also, why should such a dangerous and lethal weapon be put in the hands of a civilian Assault weapons were made for the military and they should stay in the military, not in the hands of civilians and possibly criminals.
However, with the rise of mass shootings and terrorism, people may need an assault weapon to be prepared for the unexpected. Police can take too long to arrive and that leaves harmless civilian lives in danger if the police can ‘t get there in time. If a law-abiding civilian is prepared, that could save the lives of the people around them and even the lives of police officers from harm as well. The chances of catastrophic events happening are very unlikely. Having civilians carry around assault weapons over their shoulders can cause panic and hysteria among the general public. While it is good to be ready for the unexpected but to be ready for mass shootings and terrorism, it is very unnecessary to have an assault weapon ready.
Third, making assault weapons accessible also means criminals can get their hands on them too. It puts the lives of people in danger if a gun falls into the hands of a psychopath. There are an abundant amount of assault weapons in the country and it is very hard to keep track of all of them. Because of the abundant amounts of weapons, criminals can get assault weapons from private dealers. For example, if a criminal has a connection with someone, they have easy access to assault weapons.
However, many states in America have different gun laws. California, for example, requires mandatory background checks by licensed dealers and also keeps a record of the sale of firearms for both small and big. Also, there is a waiting period after the purchase of all firearms. California has a ten day waiting period before the purchased firearm can be released to the owner. Gun laws in certain states may be strict however, there are many ways to get around it. Criminals could get their guns from states where gun laws are looser. Take Chicago for example, it was dubbed the murder capital of the United States because of the amount of gun violence. The state of Illinois has some of the strictest gun laws in the country but that doesn ‘t stop gun violence from occurring. A criminal can get guns from other states that do not require background checks and the registration of firearms. Laws cannot stop violence but only provoke criminals to find loopholes in the systems.
Assault weapons are dangerous and lethal. They provoke more harm and violence. Assault weapons are not necessary for self-defense. Having assault weapons be legal means everyone has access to it and even criminals. And if assault weapons were to be ban, how would the government enforce the ban and how would people react to the ban.
